The best way of Getting Started is to team up with an experienced geocacher. But not everyone knows of such a person. So this article has been written for the person who needs to teach him/herself the basics.

UserName & Account
A web site called Geocaching.com tracks the players and the caches. You will need to register for an account on the geocaching.com site. It is free. What you choose as a username is up to you. The only rule is that your username cannot be a duplicate of an existing name. Many geocachers become creative and make up rather fanciful names.

Your account on geocaching.com will give you access to a listing of caches, and allow you to mark those you find.
