Glossary
- Sizes and Difficulty
Not only are there different types of caches, the size of the container
hidden in a cache also varies. Geocaching.com uses a grid with 5 spaces
to denote the five sizes. There is a red dot in one of the spaces to
indicate size. Listed below from smallest to largest are descriptions
of the different sizes. An example is given to help you visualize the
size.
- Micro
- The
smallest size cache container. Example, 35mm film can, hide-a-key. This
size container often has room for only a log book. You even need to
bring your own pen to sign the log book. As you can imagine, these can
be hidden anywhere and everywhere. Some are magnetic. They can present
a real challenge.
- Small
- The
2nd size cache container. Since geocachers can decide what size to call
the container they are hiding there is some cross-over from the micro
size here. Check the written description of the cache site. The creator
will often state the type of container. Some of these are magnetic.
This size can present a real challenge.
- Regular
- The
3rd size cache container is of a moderate size. Example, 6x6 tupperware
container, pint sized plastic jar, 50mm ammo can. This size container
is often hidden in bushes or under leaves. Some cache site creators can
be quite creative with the hiding places for these larger container.
Making the cache container larger doesn't make it any easier to find.
- Large
- The
4th size cache container is big. Example, 12x12 tupperware container,
1/2 gallon sized plastic jar, double-sized ammo can. This size
container is sometimes on the ground but can also be found suspended
high above the ground. Some cache site creators can be quite creative
with the hiding places for these big container. Making the cache
container larger doesn't make it any easier to find.
- X
- The
5th size cache container is a specialty cache. The X stands for extra.
This can be an extra cache added to a MultiCache set. Multicaches are
described on the glossary - types page.
- Hollow
Box
- Another
of the 5th size of cache container and also a specialty cache. This
denotes a Virtual Cache which is described on the glossary - types page.
- Difficulty
- Shown
on the cache site description page. Uses a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is
very easy to find and 5 is very difficult. Refers to how well the
container is hidden.
- Terrain
- Shown
on the cache site description page. Uses a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is
level ground or no major obstacles and 5 is a steep slope or a lot of
obstacles. In Delaware obstacles could be brambles, poison ivy, swampy
conditions or even an abundance of flies or mosquitoes.
