While the official start of summer does not happen until near the end of June, the official beach season started with the celebration of Memorial Day at the end of May. Many people will be headed to Delaware's beaches starting now and continuing through Labor Day. Some of them are sure to be geocachers!
rehobch has created a cache for those who not only want to go "down the beach" but would also like to keep their geocaching skills in top shape while they are there.
When asked how he came to create this cache, rehobch replied:
"Since I am fairly new to Geocaching, I wanted to try finding as many different types of caches as I could before deciding on what I wanted to hide. I was truly inspired by two things: (1) Hart612 really takes you on trips to areas you would not have otherwise known about, (2) I really enjoyed the Hometown Tour Virtual Cache by gpsfun. I wanted to create puzzle caches which would make people think as well as give them a tour of the areas I know well. I also wanted to have a regular cache at the end (which can be difficult in these popular beach resorts).
I set up one for Rehoboth Beach and then Lewes. The third was Lower Slower Delaware Beach Tour. This takes you through several beach towns and ends in another beach town with a regular cache. I tried to mix in some popular spots with areas that people might not have seen before. I did this while trying to come up with locations containing numbers which should remain for quite some time. I also did not want sites that could easily be looked up on the Internet to find the answers. While setting this up, I had trouble trying to come up with a name for the cache. It finally dawned on me that it might take several trips or a few days to find all the numbers and the final cache. Of course, this fit right in with the "lower slower Delaware" theme of Sussex County. I hope that Geocachers have fun with this and get to see some new sights at the beaches. It is also great to read in the logs about the adventures they have in finding the cache.
Back in January our featured Geocache was Horn229's "Under Cover" series. This is a set of 6 caches all of which have the cache container hidden in a similar manner. It was stated that this set would be good GPS practice for those who were still learning how to use their GPS. Lower Slower Delaware Beach Tour can do this too.
This is the first Puzzle cache we have featured. For those new to the sport of geocaching, a Puzzle cache is one where - instead of being given a set of coordinates to enter into your GPS - the creator gives you a puzzle to solve which results in the discovery of the coordinates. Whether you find the correct coordinates depends on your skill in solving the Puzzle. Puzzle caches can take many forms. Some are quite easy - others are very difficult. Some have only a few steps - others have numerous steps.
Lower Slower Delaware Beach Tour presents you with a set of 7 directions. Some of these are coordinates to which you need to travel. Once there you need to use you powers of observation and find a particular phrase on a particular sign. Other directions explain how to translate the information from the sign into data that will lead to the discovery of the coordinates to find that cache rehobch has hidden at the end.
You should be aware that this cache is also known as the "this may take several days to complete" tour. That may be due to traffic, to the difficulty in locating the signs, or the fact that you'll be traveling through some fascinating parts of Delaware - you may decide to stop and explore before moving on to the next challenge.
So far only 7 geocachers have logged this one. But it only went up on March 16, of this year - not exactly beach weather yet. As the summer progresses this count should surely rise.
Our thanks to rehobch for creating an intriguing puzzle cache that can bring a new kind of fun to visiting the beach towns of Delaware.
